What to bring to a climbing gym

A simple first-visit packing approach that keeps the focus on movement, instruction, and the equipment the venue actually requires.

Start with ordinary essentials

Bring comfortable clothes that allow movement, water, and whatever identification or booking information the venue requests. Think about the trip home as well: a layer and a change of clothes may be useful. You do not need to assemble a technical expedition kit for an indoor introduction.

Ask about rentals before buying

Check shoe availability and, for a rope session, the equipment included with instruction. Ask staff to help with fit and use. A borrowed harness or secondhand technical item should not be treated as suitable merely because it looks like equipment used by other climbers.

Keep the floor clear

Use the gym’s storage arrangements. Bags, bottles, and loose belongings should stay away from landing zones and circulation routes. Before climbing, follow staff guidance about jewelry, pockets, and items that could catch or fall. Respect any chalk or footwear rules that apply to the venue.

Bring questions, too

Useful first-visit questions include where beginners should start, how to recognize active climbing space, and what instruction is needed for your plan. It is easier to ask early than to imitate an unfamiliar technique. A calm introduction is worth more than having every accessory.

Questions, answered.

Do I need chalk?

Ask the venue about its policy and rental or purchase options. Do not assume every type of chalk is permitted.

Can I use outdoor shoes on the wall?

Follow the gym’s footwear rules and ask about appropriate climbing shoes.
