A separate park, not an extra gym room
Mortar Rock Park is one of Berkeley’s Northbrae rock parks. The city lists bouldering and climbing among its uses. Its proximity to Indian Rock makes the two easy to discuss together, but they are separate places with different features and individual decisions to make on arrival.
Choose a modest first objective
For a first visit, understanding the area is enough. Observe how the space is shared, identify whether you have the experience to evaluate the intended climbing, and avoid assuming that a route described as easy is appropriate for your group. An outdoor grade does not describe every risk or the consequences of a fall.
Let other people have a turn
In a small area, pads, bags, and a few friends can occupy a surprising amount of space. Keep belongings organized and avoid blocking circulation. Ask before sharing equipment or recording another person. The person already working a problem does not owe the group coaching, beta, or an uninterrupted performance.
Keep current information close
The City of Berkeley page is the reference for park information. Bring the relevant map and know your return plan. If access, crowding, or conditions are unsuitable, choose another permitted activity rather than expanding onto unverified rock or adjacent property.
